Description or Title
College of Arts & Sciences The University of South Florida (USF) proposes to establish the Center for Molecular Diversity in Drug Design, Discovery, and Development, CMD5, that will take advantage of existing strengths and cross disciplinary resources in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), The College of Medicine (COM), and the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute.

The imaging modalities used in biology and medicine are based on a variety of energy sources, including light, electrons, lasers, X-rays, radionuclides, ultrasound, and nuclear magnetic resonance. The images produced span orders of magnitude in scale, ranging from molecules and cells to organ systems and the full body. The advantages and limitations of each modality are primarily governed by the basic physical and biological principles that influence the way each energy form interacts with tissues. The variety of disease processes and abnormalities affecting all regions of the human body are so numerous and different that no single method has prevailed to the complete exclusion of others. The complementarity of the diverse imaging modalities has given rise to the area of multimodality or multiscale imaging and provides new emphasis in imaging science. Towards this goal, we propose to establish the Center for Multiscale Bioimaging at the Department of Physics at the University of South Florida.
College of Arts & Sciences
Physics Department
The Physics Department is engaged in Integrated Functional Materials Research.
College of Arts & Sciences and College of Engineering USF is strong and competitive in the area of Coastal Environmental Research and has the potential to become a leader in this field. This area is not currently recognized as a program at USF but involves faculty with funded research programs who investigate problems in coastal regions including coastal wetlands, near-shore karst, and shallow water marine environments. It also includes faculty who utilize natural coastal resources for experimental organisms or model systems. These faculty are in the departments of Biology, Chemistry, and Geology, ESP, Geography, and the College of Engineering.
College of Arts & Sciences At USF, there are several researchers within Psychology, Communication Sciences & Disorders, Aging Studies, Criminology, and Biology—as well as in FMHI, Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing--who are well-respected nationally and who consistently obtain federal funding in support of Behavioral and Brain Sciences.
College of Education

Several initiatives underway in the College of Education are described.

College of Engineering Several initiatives proposed by the College of Engineering are described.
